End Cut is yet another great addition to the New Paltz dining scene. It is located in a neighborhood cluster of favorite destinations on Church Street, including Hokkaido, and newcomer, Huckleberry. Proprietor, Jordan Schor, who also brought you Jordan’s Bistro & Pizzeria in New Paltz and Solstice in Kingston, opened his newest restaurant last year.
New Paltz newcomers Huckleberry and End Cut have more company this month. Three new restaurants opened – Schatzi’s on Main Street. Garvan’s Gastropub at the golf course, and The Parish at the Waterstreet Market. We stopped in to check them out.
You will find Huckleberry tucked away in a corner off of Church Street, across from Hokkaido. The pub is exactly that, and nothing more, and I say that in a most complimentary way. The place has the look and feel of a European village pub, but one that caters to the locals and not the tourists, where families out for a bite are as common, and as welcome, as the locals stopping in for a pint and some conversation on the way home from work.
Every regional cuisine has unique characteristics, usually predicated on the local food crops, regional herbs and spices, and local cultural or religious preferences – or taboos. Nowhere is this more in focus than in the cuisine of Thailand. Like many eastern cuisines, the cook will balance sweet with sour, salty with spicy. Appearance and texture is given more attention than in western cookery, with picture perfect presentations typically plated on serving vessels suitable for gallery viewing all by themselves.
There is a reason for the line out the door. Do not let the line dissuade you from choosing Hokkaido for dinner, despite the fact that there are two other sushi restaurants nearby. This is the place.
If you actually needed another reason to visit the New Paltz Water Street Market, you now have one. The market is located on the western edge of the village of New Paltz, overlooking the Wallkill River Bridge.
