Montgomery Place Orchards
Red Hook, NY 12504
Montgomery Place Orchards gets my vote for the prettiest farm stand in the Hudson Valley. Situated on Route 9G just north of the village of Rhinebeck, this picturesque market becomes a destination each summer for shoppers searching for local fresh produce and dairy products from area creameries.
My absolute favorite time to visit is in autumn, when the shelves are adorned with dozens of traditional and heirloom varieties of freshly picked apples, and piles of colorful gourds and winter squash and pumpkins galore. It really is worth it to bring a camera as every turn brings another scene ripped from the cover of Valley Table.
The owners seem to go out of their way to showcase local producers, in addition to local farms. Today we found humus from one of our favorite area restaurants – Serevan in Amenia, alongside olive oil from Mercato in Red Hook, and cheeses from Salt Point’s Sprout Creek Farms along with our favorite cheesemaker from the Adirondacks, Nettle Meadow Farm in Thurman.
The farm also gets a round of applause for spreading the Slow Food gospel of heirloom fruits and vegetables, featuring numerous varieties of “antique” apples each fall.
The farmstand is open from 9 AM until 6 PM. Starting in mid-September they will close on Mondays and Tuesdays.
