Friends Lake Inn is one of our favorite dining destinations. Hidden away on a quite country road above Friends Lake, this luxury inn also offers one of the Adirondack’s premier dining opportunities. The top notch kitchen is complemented by one of the area’s most extensive wine lists, and a service staff that balances professionalism with some down home, north country hospitality.
Farm to table is not a marketing slogan at Eat ‘n Meet Grill. The kitchen’s obsession is on quality, fresh – local when possible – ingredients. Chef Vargo reached out to the local growers early on and has cultivated those relationships not just as suppliers, but also to use his kitchen to prepare their produce in offerings for the local farmers markets.
It has now been twenty years since Brunetto’s in Warrensburg opened its doors. The restaurant quickly became a North Country favorite with visitors and locals alike. A seat in the dining room is a very hard ticket to score during the summer tourist season, and securing a seat at the bar is even harder. The restaurant does not take reservations, but we crossed our fingers and stopped in last night for dinner.
Now offered in over one hundred restaurants and pubs, Paradox Brewery’s offerings are best sampled right here at home, in our fair town of Schroon Lake, NY.
Start with beautifully designed rustic space, add a fireplace, a gorgeous Gregson designed bar, and a wood-burning pizza oven. Throw in a young, friendly wait staff, two community focused owners, and you have the makings of a successful restaurant. And it’s fun.
The Bullhouse is a North Country newcomer, located in a renovated storefront in the center of Chestertown on Route 9. The proprietor is one Lonnie Shenefield, whose bonafides include a stint in the kitchen at Hudson Valley landmark, Ship Lantern Inn. We found her filling in at the bar when we stopped in for a quick dinner last night.
It is hard to believe that it has only been eight years since Nettle Meadow’s owners, Lorraine Lambiase and Sheila Flanagan, pulled up stakes in California, drove cross country, and started the business we now know as Nettle Meadow Farm and Cheese Company in Thurman. They were hobbyist cheese makers with a dream, ambition, four – yes four – goats, an epic work ethic, and I assume a wicked sense of humor.
Poutine may be the perfect food, and now I have found the perfect poutine. Poutine with Oscars sausage gravy and Maplebrook Farm cheese curds. No one knows exactly when this North Country dish drifted south across the border from Quebec. Perhaps we can thank the colonial era fur trappers for this adopted local favorite. Poutine is […]
Most restaurateurs will go out of their way greet regulars. Jim stopped over because he did not recognize us, and wanted to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We certainly were.
